Natural Light
Whether you’re walking down a hallway, sitting in the chapel or visiting one of our dining rooms, you’ll immediately notice the role light plays in our strategic design.
Light offers practical functionality, by allowing our residents to see better as they move around the community. It also serves as a sense of comfort to many of our residents battling dementia and anxiety that can be caused by dark areas and is a proven way to reduce depression. In designing our home-like environments, natural light is a crucial component. Click on arrows or bullets below to flip the photos.
Dining Experience
Our dining rooms are designed for socializing and creating a multi-sensory experience for all. Our senses decrease with age, especially for those living with memory impairment. To compensate, our chefs creatively prepare dishes daily that are fresh, aromatic, and bursting with flavor to boost our residents’ moods and appetites. The open kitchen concept allows aromas to reach the residents well before the plate arrives, and the openness encourages our culinary team and residents to get to know each other. Our white tableware and contrasting linens enhance depth perception.
Our philosophy around food allows us to reach beyond any cognitive challenges residents might be facing, to enhance their emotional and physical well-being and help them live in the moment.
Local Craftsmanship
We don’t have “cookie-cutter” designs for our spaces. Each of our communities has a unique feel that is catered to the design preferences of our residents and the history of the area. One way we capture the regional design influence is by supporting local artists and suppliers. For example, in many of our communities you’ll find locally sourced exposed wooden beams in our ceilings, natural stone fireplaces, and original pieces of artwork throughout our communities.
Small Details Matter
We want our residents to look forward to not only the food and company at each meal, but to also experience the special ambiance that’s in the little details too.
Our dining rooms mimic a high-class restaurant, set with complete dinnerware, white crisp linens, and beautiful center pieces. Our white dinnerware serves as a lovely backdrop – allowing our freshly prepared meals to take center-stage and entice the eyes as much as the palate.
Contrasted Colors
We didn’t just hire a qualified interior designer to choose our paint and fabric swatches; there's a purpose behind every design choice. Down the hallways, you’ll notice gentle variations in carpet patterns. These contrasts help our visually impaired residents better see the floor and reduces their risk of a fall. The same visual cues continue in the fabric of our chairs and couches, which vary slightly from the carpet colors that lay beneath them. As dementia progresses, and depth perception fades, color and pattern variations help our residents see clearly as they sit down or get up.
Down the hallways, soft wall colors contrast with our resident’s doors, and other areas they are welcome to enter. If a door is used primarily for staff, it’s a different color; one that blends in with the wall, helping to reduce confusion.
Ample Interior Space to Stroll & Engage
We invite you to take a tour of any of our communities and see if you notice what makes us different. Our design layout encourages our residents to stroll, while engaging along the way. You’ll notice destinations in every direction, like a library, chapel, pub, art studio, and more. Our large living spaces also provide great areas to connect with visiting family members.
Whether our residents want to connect with a group or sit quietly with a book, they’re empowered to make those choices for themselves.
Intellectually Engaging Spaces
We don’t want our residents to ever feel bored, so in addition to a rich lineup of daily programming activities, we’ve also designed our communities to foster intellectual engagement wherever residents decide to take a stroll. For example, residents can curl up in a corner with a book from the library, watch the news, or play a game outside of scheduled activities (which also include many brain-enriching exercises such as trivia night using our IN2L software).
The Right Accents to Promote Independence
By strategically using contrasting colors and patterns as a way to reduce falls and increase ease of wayfinding to important spaces, our purposeful design promotes independence as long as possible. Key areas like dining rooms are conveniently located, and placing our courtyards “hacienda-style” in the middle of the building allows easy, safe access for all.
A Home-Like Environment
We want our residents to feel at home at all times. We make spaces feel cozy by using comfortable furniture, soft lighting, natural colors, and natural materials such as wood and stone.
Flexible Spaces
We provide a number of spaces that are flexible in their use. For example, we have private dining rooms that can serve as both a space for family celebrations and a space to for extracurricular activities such as club meetings.
